2012 Jan 16 Mountains to Climb
Marc Blake, backed by Geoffrey Wallace, gave a detailed account of their recent walk to Mt Everest Base Camp. Sounds easy, base and all. It was grueling, in thin air half way up to the summit and bitter cold. Both learned they could go beyond imagined limits and come back to tell the tale. The walk, to benefit African school children, was sponsored by the UK charity HAST. The site has lots of pictures all along the way. The evening included cutting of the pita, an apple pie (befitting the American part of HELADA's moniker) and drawing of humorous fortunes (one of which was symbolic of the 'ghouri'). Great fun, plus a query vote on programs for the year ahead.
2011 Dec 12 Holiday and Wassail
Keith Moore, of the U Indy Graduate Music Program brought students to demonstrate and lead 'shape note singing' which then morphed over into holiday songs. With ample time for more music and chat, the party was held in the warm mini-theatre of The House of Dance, the Dora Stratou offices, in Plaka. Cheese was washed down with organic and Mesogheian wines in HELADA's new (reusable Yioula wine glasses).
2011 Nov 14 OCCUPY Together? An open discussion of Occupy Wall Street and the Occupy encampments and demonstrations that spun off from the Zuccotti Park occupation in NY City. Central to the discussion were the opportunity for people from all walks to come together and struggle with ideas, the emergence of specific demands, the prospects for the effort to develop into a true movement, and for a movement to find political purchase.
2011 Oct 17 LOCAL CURRENCY: The Volos TEM
Christos Papaioannou, member of the TEM coordination team, presented on how this local currency unit was started as a way to increase local trade in a time of short cash and rising unemployment. TEM value is traded online mainly, among interested parties who have a product or service to buy or sell.
2011 Sep 19 HELADA gathered to watch a screening of Why We Fight, a BBC4 documentary, directed by Eugene Jarecki, about the military-industrial complex. First screened at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival on 17 January 2005, exactly forty-four years after President Dwight D. Eisenhower's farewell address, it won the rand Jury Prize for Documentary as well as the 2006 Grimme Awards. While the film's coverage is not limited to the US, it is particularly timely as cuts to the military budget figure prominently on the upcoming deliberations of the Congressional debt-ceiling 'super committee.'
2011 July 11 The Fabricated Crisis on Three Levels: World, US, Greece
Professor Andreas Athinaios, of The Hellenic Foundation, presented a lively view of the current crises, beginning with conservative efforts to roll back FDR's New Deal in the US (1930s). Initial organizing to produce a series of video discussions to further understanding began as a result of this meeting.
2011 May 30 Bye Bye Blue Sky - The Sky Like You've Never Seen Before, a documentary film by Patrick Pasin.
Based on statements by activists and scientists, as well as graphic evidence, this film discussed claims that chemtrail spraying by airplanes is already being carried out. For an introduction to this contentious subject, this 4-minute video is recommended http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKHjN0vUvOY
2011 May 3 Nuclear Future? Safe, Clean Energy in the Aftermath of TMI, Chernobyl, Fukushima
Gerasimos Arapis, PhD, Director, Laboratory of Ecology & Environmental Sciences at the Agricultural University of Athens, Botanikos, presented a background explanation of what radioactivity is and how it affects living organisms. Drawing on his own experience as part of the international research team in Chernobyl after the accident, Dr Arapis shared the effects on surrounding countries and the conclusion that a clean, safe energy future should not include nuclear.
2011 Mar 21 Greek Taxes: The Changes and the No-Changes
Greek attorney and HELADA member Karolina Andriakopoulou presented a lively and informative talk on changes in the Greek income tax law and practical problems faced this year by tax filers as new changes are taken into consideration. Video excerpts from Karolina' presentation will be available soon on the
Forum, while the handout she prepared is available here.
2011 Feb 21 HELADA took its first look at a knotty issue, "Immigration in Greece: Seeking Positive Outcomes." A panel of informed experts representing government, academia and immigrant organizations shared their views and efforts. Participants included Takis Andreas, Ministry of the Interior; Arianna Papadopoulou, Athens Ombudsman office; Moawia Ahmed, Greek Forum of Migrants; Martin Baldwin-Edwards, Mediterranean Migration Observatory, Panteion University; and Theodoros Polyzoides, President, Demokratikoi (Greek party). Read more here.
2011 Jan HELADA gathered at the Athens Centre for the New Year Pitta Cutting and film. After loading up with a savory pita, provided by Kristin Zissis, and wine samples from Mitroioannis wine purveyors of Kalivia, HELADAns settled down to watch Michael Moore's film, Capitalism: A Love Story. The evening was seen as a 'cutting-edge' start to a challenging year ahead.
2010 Dec 13 HELADA celebrated the holiday season with its second annual Holiday Dinner. Marc Blake and Geoffrey Wallace put together a just-right menu, which the Maritsa's staff pulled out the stops in the kitchen to produce! The evening was social, with time for chat and good cheer! The cover price included a contribution to a local feeding kitchen for the poor, and many members also brought in-kind donations of warm clothing, blankets, and small utensils which were given to the Mother Theresa society.
2010 Nov 8 Natascha Barrymore, founder and director of Chance International, presented on "The Power of One to the Power of N" a personal journey that has resulted in a highly effective, low-overhead community support program for villages affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami in the Indonesian province of Banda Aceh. Learn more about Chance International and its efforts in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, here and at http://www.chanceinternational.net/ and Natascha's story at http://www.chanceinternational.net/appendix2.php
2010 Oct 16 In lieu of its regular meeting, HELADA set an 'outing' for the Steven Hill lecture on "The U.S. Midterm Elections and the Challenge of Europe" at U-Indy Cultural Centre in Plaka. The lecture was part of Hill's book-signing tour, sponsored by Dems Abroad chapters in 16 European cities. Aimed at a US readership, Hill's book, "Europe's Promise," offers a concise analysis of positive EU policies. For the Athens events, try Ann Martin-Papazoglou's blog at http://linkagogopage.blogspot.com/ and for Hill's updates www.Steven-Hill.com
2010 Sep 13 HELADA looks at "Obama Administration Accomplishments" of the last 18 months, in light of the Upcoming US Midterm Elections. Guest speaker, Yvette Jarvis, chair of Democrats Abroad Greece.
Minutes here.
Chronology of accomplishments and article links here.
2010 June 21 What Can WE Do to Save Greece? (Workshop) at the Athens Centre. We split up in two groups, using the workshop format to examine the big picture in manageable bites, and then reported back to the plenary before adjourning to dinner. One group took Economy and the current Greek crisis, coming up with some sound ideas that we as citizens or residents can implement. The second group examined Environment and Sustainable Living, again coming up with some solid avenues to pursue in concert with our Greek neighbors. The full reports of ideas developed by the workshop are here.
2010 May 17 Film and Popcorn Night: Confessions of an Economic Hitman at Athens Centre. The evening sounded like fun, and turned out to be contentious. The 2009 Greek-US documentary, directed by Stelios Kouloglou and based on the best-selling 2004 non-fiction work by John Perkins, provided Perkins' account of his career with consulting firm Chas. T. Main in Boston (and NSA) and his subsequent activities as a self-described "economic hit man" principally in Latin America. The post-screening discussion led by Martin Baldwin-Edwards and Alec Mally, included some heavy defense of US policies, refuting the film's premise, and some objection from other members citing well-known 'interference' in other countries' affairs. The outcome was ... unresolved.
2010 Apr 19

Imagine red candles in metal cylinders, sea green drinks, tacos, chips and salsa! And try to believe that NObody brought a camera!

MEDICARE AND MARGARITAS at Maritsa's on Sofokleous. Dan Chavez, federal benefits officer at the US Embassy, presented on Social Security in Greece, covered by a bi-lateral agreement, and the IKA substitute for Medicare which is not available abroad. We also showed the video greeting from Paul Crist, former legislative aide for Senator Paul Sarbanes, and Founder & President of Americans for Medicare in Mexico. The video lays out the details of a Medicare pilot project which if passed would save US retirees grief and the Medicare system money. The video is available here. And to tie it all together ... sangria and chips for the welcome, tacos and margaritas after the program, cooked up by our volunteers and served by the Maritsa's staff. A fun, tasty and informative evening!

2010 Mar 15 Bees: Nature's Pollinators and Healers at the Athens Centre. Dr. Paschalis Harizanis, Entomologist (Msc, PhD), professor at the Agricultural University of Athens, Laboratory of Sericulture & Apiculture gave a fascinating slide show on the essential role of bees in world food supply, the benefits of honey, the function of a hive, and possible causes of bee colony collapse disorder (CCD). The presentation included honey tasting of several distinctive samples of Greek honey. Read a researcher's article on CCD, sent along by Dr Harizanis here.
2010 Feb 22 HELADA does its ... TAXES: HAVE YOU FILED YOURS? Our guest speakers linked Greek and US tax concerns and tied in what non-Greek EU HELADAns may want to check into. Karolina Andriakopoulou, Greek tax lawyer, presented on Greek law, expected changes and effects on tax planning for US and EU citizens. Dimitris Papatryphon, tax accountant, outlined what US citizens can do -- or should have been doing -- to get the best tax results with their US returns.

Read more about the presentations and members's comments here.
2009 SEP 14 HELADA heard about science-based H1N1 protocols. Member/chemist John Lewis presented the protocols he's established for his company should Swine Flu become a problem in Greece. While the flu itself may prove less severe than its 'pandemic' dubbing may suggest, John's approach is precautionary. Even mild cases can keep working parents at home with sick kids, disrupting the operation of business and schools alike. Read more about sensible precautions here.
2009 JUL 21 HELADA visited The Acropolis Museum. Member/architect Marc Blake gave a brief introduction to the building, its long development and current arrangement. Dinner afterwards at Byzantino in Kidathinaion Sq, Plaka,
